Muskegon County lies on the shores of
Lake Michigan. Michigan’s largest river, the Muskegon River, winds through the area forming Muskegon Lake just before entering the big lake. Early inhabitants included the Ottawa and Potawatomi Indians, and in the 1600’s French fur traders came into the region. The economy changed from trading to lumbering with over 16 lumber mills operating on Lake Muskegon in the 1860’s. |
